MedEvac: Medical Evacuations from Gaza

What the program has delivered

Since 2024, FAJR Global has evacuated critically injured patients from Gaza for treatment abroad, most of them to Jordan and Egypt.

  • Jordan: 84 patients treated, and 220 people supported in all: the 84 patients and 136 companions.
  • Egypt: 144 patients. In Egypt, FAJR pays for medical treatment; living costs are not covered.
  • Invested to date: about $3.5 million in Jordan, for medical care and logistics, and about $686,000 in Egypt.

What one evacuation costs

Most evacuated patients need a staged series of operations, not a single one: burn surgery, orthopedic reconstruction, eye surgery, prosthetics and months of physiotherapy. Costs vary with the injury, from a few hundred dollars to more than $150,000 for one patient. In Jordan, the total cost averages $41,667 per patient.

Of the $3.5 million spent in Jordan, $2.877 million paid for medical care: surgery, hospital stays, diagnostics, medication and the clinical teams. The rest, about $620,000, paid for logistics, housing, food and daily support for patients and the relatives who travel with them.

No patient recovers alone

A parent at a child's bedside is part of the treatment. In Jordan, 136 companions have stayed alongside the 84 patients.

Recovery also means mental health care. Patients and families receive trauma-focused therapy and family counseling in Arabic, and FAJR provides schooling for children and plans each family's return.

This work runs through the Gaza Medical Evacuations project. To fund the next evacuation, give to Medical Evacuations for Injured Gaza Children.

This program is part of FAJR Medical, FAJR's area of work for surgery, evacuations and hospital care.

How the program works

Five steps, one child at a time

Step 1

Identify

Critically injured patients in Gaza are assessed with medical partners on the ground and ranked by urgency.

Step 2

Evacuate

Most patients travel with a family companion. FAJR handles logistics, travel documents, border clearance and the medical transfer.

Step 3

Treat

Staged surgery and inpatient care are delivered in partner hospitals. FAJR funds every procedure, follow-up consultation, medication, and medical consumable for as long as treatment requires.

Step 4

Rehabilitate

Physiotherapy, prosthetics, and psychological support rebuild function and confidence. FAJR covers every session and device, from first fitting to final discharge, so no patient is discharged too early.

Step 5

Support and return

In Jordan, FAJR provides housing, meals and daily support for patients and families, schooling for children, and a plan for each family's return.

Evacuees

The children behind the numbers

Each of these children was evacuated from Gaza through One Life at a Time to receive the care that could no longer reach them at home.

One story

Mariam's journey from Gaza to the United Kingdom

Mariam lost her arm in an attack on Gaza. After a United States visa was refused, FAJR Global and Project Pure Hope worked through the referrals, paperwork and logistics until she reached a hospital in the United Kingdom. Her arrival was covered by The Guardian and The Independent, but the work behind it is the same work FAJR does for every child on the evacuation list.
