A Mental Health Center for Gaza’s Children
Part of FAJR's Gaza Mental Health Support for Families program
Help establish a mental health center in Gaza and run it for 12 months, so children and caregivers have somewhere to turn.

Gaza’s children have lived through bombardment, displacement and loss, and most have nowhere to turn for mental health care. FAJR Global is raising $100,000 to establish a mental health center in Gaza and run it for 12 months, led by FAJR’s mental health team and Gaza clinicians and educators.
Why Gaza’s children need mental health care
Nearly nine in ten children consulted by UNICEF in the Gaza Strip asked for psychological support, and 91.8 percent said they lived in fear of bombardment (UNICEF, August 2026). The care that once existed is largely gone: all six government community mental health centers in Gaza were destroyed between April 2024 and 2025 (BJPsych Open, 2026).
For children, distress can show up as trouble sleeping, irritability, withdrawal, physical complaints or difficulty concentrating. A child who cannot settle in a classroom may need a calmer adult, a predictable routine or a clinical assessment.
How the center will work
The center follows FAJR’s mental health model, set out in its 205-page MHPSS manual:
- Listen first: Children and caregivers are seen for what they need now, starting with safety, basic needs and family support.
- Support: Trained, supervised staff offer structured psychosocial support for children and groups for caregivers.
- Specialist care: Children with more complex needs receive assessment and psychiatric consultation from FAJR’s mental health team.
- Connect: The center works with the teachers and school counselors FAJR trains, so children are referred and followed up, not lost between services.
The work is led by Dr. Mariam Aboukar, FAJR’s Chair of Mental Health, with a global team of psychiatrists, psychologists and nurse practitioners. Learn more about FAJR’s mental health program.
What FAJR’s mental health team has done
Between April and June 2026, FAJR’s team assessed the needs of 1,505 children and adolescents ages 6 to 17 in Gaza. On October 11, 2026, 24 school counselors and teacher supervisors in Gaza completed Practical Tools for Psychosocial Support in the Classroom, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. Read about the training.
Outside Gaza, FAJR’s MHPSS services in Jordan reported 78 participants (70 children and 8 adults) and 250 one-to-one sessions for medically evacuated families. In Egypt, the FAJR-INARA program reported 408 beneficiaries, 326 children and 82 adults, between June 15, 2025, and March 15, 2026.
What your gift provides
$50 helps fund two counseling sessions for a child. $100 helps train one teacher or school counselor to support children in the classroom. About $275 keeps the center open for one day, and about $8,350 runs it for a month. The full $100,000 establishes the center and runs it for 12 months.
